Botox, Dermal Fillers and Nurse Practitioners
July 21, 2016A common question regarding non-invasive aesthetic procedures is: Who can perform aesthetic procedures and under what regulations? To answer this question, the first step is understanding the regulations in your state. The following information does not reflect information from the state, so please use this information as a starting place. Always check with your state licensing board to receive the most up to date information. Each state has different regulations surrounding the practice of aesthetics.
Many medical professionals are looking for ways to meet the public’s demand for non-invasive aesthetic procedures. In particular, Nurse Practitioners wonder if a collaborating physician is needed to order the product for aesthetic procedures. This varies on a state to state basis, but what better place to begin than with Allergan (the pharmaceutical company for Botox® Cosmetic, Juvederm® products, Voluma® and Volbella®).
I spent some time on the telephone with Allergan, and they were kind enough to provide the following list of states when Nurse Practitioners need a collaborating physician to order Botox® Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers.
Nurse Practitioners can set up an Allergan account, be financially responsible for the account but must have a collaborating physician listed on the account in the following states:
Alabama, Arkansas, California, Deleware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachuetes, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsalvina, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia
Nurse Practitioners can set up an Allergan account and order product without a collaborating physician listed in the following states:
Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
Thank you Allergan for being so helpful! Please remember, this information can change over time so use the above information as a reference. You can contact Allergan directly at 800-811-4148.
After researching your state’s requirements for practicing aesthetic procedures, and verifying with Allergan the necessity of a collaborating physician, the next step is training! MedAesthetics Training’s aesthetic courses are open to all nurse practitioners including the Botox Training and Dermal Filler Training course. Attending a quality aesthetic course with an experienced instructor is key, as well as practicing on live models during the hands-on training.
