North Carolina Scope of Practice for Aesthetic Injectables

Physicians and Physician Assistants
North Carolina physicians may perform, prescribe, and appropriately delegate botulinum toxin and dermal filler procedures within lawful medical practice. Eligible PAs may register for team-based practice under G.S. 90-9.3A when the experience and practice-setting requirements are met; the Medical Board emphasizes that team-based practice is not independent practice. Other PAs remain subject to applicable supervision requirements.
Nurse Practitioners and Other APRNs
North Carolina nurse practitioners require approval to practice and a collaborative practice agreement with a primary supervising physician. Procedures must remain within the NP’s population focus, education, certification, demonstrated competence, and collaborative practice agreement. Senate Bill 966, the SAVE Act, remains in the Senate Rules Committee as of August 30, 2026 and is not law. Other APRN roles should confirm role-specific authority.
Registered Nurses
The North Carolina Board of Nursing position statement includes neuromodulator and dermal filler injections among prescribed or ordered cosmetic procedures that an RN may perform when all stated conditions are met. An authorized prescriber must evaluate the client and issue the order, the nurse must have documented competency, and the employer must maintain emergency policies and resources. The Board statement does not require the prescriber to be on site for the RN role.
Dentists
North Carolina dentists may attend for education and continuing education credit only. The Dental Board’s December 2021 statement says purely cosmetic or dermatological use may fall outside dental scope, while a properly trained dentist may use botulinum toxin to treat a diagnosed dental condition when credible scientific evidence supports the standard of care. The statement does not publish a cosmetic facial-area list or numeric training-hour requirement.
Who May Attend North Carolina Botox and Dermal Filler Training?
Standard hands-on enrollment is available to eligible physicians (MD/DO), physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other appropriately authorized APRNs, and registered nurses who hold an active North Carolina license or other lawful authorization permitting participation in the state. North Carolina dentists may attend for education and continuing education credit only; attendance does not authorize cosmetic facial injection practice.
North Carolina is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. A nurse relying on a multistate privilege must confirm that the privilege is active and must follow North Carolina practice law while participating in the state.
Attendance and authority to practice after training are separate. Completion of a course does not independently grant, expand, or determine scope of practice.

North Carolina requires dentists to complete 15 continuing education hours per calendar year. North Carolina rules identify the Academy of General Dentistry as an acceptable source of continuing education, but each dentist remains responsible for determining how a particular activity applies to renewal.
