How should new medical professionals get started with Aesthetic medicine?
May 01, 2025So, you went through med school and got a medical license. Maybe you are a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or even a full-fledged Doctor of Medicine.
Congratulations on surviving med school! Now what? There are so many career paths and opportunities to pursue. Where should you start?
First off, we understand everyone’s career and professional experience is different. In fact, we love hearing about the diverse backgrounds of our trainees. Maybe you’ve wanted to become an aesthetic practitioner since you were a child playing doctor. Or maybe you’re an experienced RN who needs a change of pace from the heavy emotional weight of pediatric critical care.
Aesthetic Medicine uniquely welcomes every medical professional!
First, Credentials and Licensing
Before you get any hands-on training, you’ll need a valid medical license. RN, NP, PA, MD, or equivalent. However, some states have specific regulations about who can and cannot practice aesthetic medicine.
For example, in Kentucky, a registered nurse has to perform Botox injections under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider. However, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) can administer Botox without supervision.
In short, check in with your state’s board of nursing for more information about compliance.
Second, Specialized Training
Don’t worry this training isn’t nearly as long as med school. You should enroll in accredited programs to learn specific treatments. And that’s where we come in.
We offer small, intimate classes with live models to give you hands-on experience. Not just with the treatment, but with all aspects of practicing medicine. That means you’ll conduct a practice consultation with a model to devise a treatment plan. You will then perform your plan under the supervision of your instructor, of course.
All of our instructors are seasoned professionals with real-world experience in the field. They’ll educate you on everything from facial anatomy to how to perform follow-ups with clients.
Of course, we’re a little biased towards ourselves. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that there are plenty of accredited training programs out there. When researching potential training courses, we recommend attending programs with smaller class sizes. That empowers you to get more one-on-one attention from the instructor. It also encourages you to ask more in-depth questions.
We also recommend starting with simple procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, and chemical peels. There’s a reason our Botox training course is the most popular. Then, once you’re comfortable, try moving up to lip fillers, sclerotherapy, and Sculptra.
Legal Disclaimer
Most of our courses offer a certification upon completion. But again, check in with your state’s board of nursing, as they might have additional requirements.
Gaining Experience
Gaining experience outside of a training environment is probably the most difficult leg of this journey. But if you have the education, you have opportunities.
Aesthetic practitioners early in their careers often start by working with an established provider. Med spa and aesthetic clinics are always looking for professionals who can perform nonsurgical procedures. Some even offer paid mentorship programs or shadowing opportunities.
If you are still struggling to find opportunities, it might be a matter of networking. Join an aesthetic medicine association and attend their events. You’ll connect with peers and perhaps potential employers.
Ongoing Education
Continuous education is a wealth of opportunities! Technologies and techniques are constantly evolving. So, re-upping your certifications not only keeps you sharp but also enhances your offerings.
Building a Practice
Building an aesthetic medicine practice is another potential avenue in your professional journey. One that deserves its own article. Owning a business is a tremendous rollercoaster with ups and downs. But it can be well worth it.
